an archive of beautiful memories is an interactive audio installation, that was exhibited in Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, NS from August 2, 2014-2016.
The project developed in response to memoirs my students had written in the Introduction to Visual Culture course at NSCAD University in 2011. Students were invited to write a memoir on an experience of beauty following a series of lectures and discussion on Elaine Scarry’s Tanner Lectures on Human Values, On Beauty and Being Just (1998). Twenty-two memoirs were recorded and stationed throughout the park, accessible through QR codes. As part of the project, I also invited jeweller and designer Rebecca Hannon to create a series of porcelain forms in response to the memoirs. These beautiful sculptures were on display throughout the park for the duration of the installation.
While you will no longer discover these memories in the park, they can still be heard on soundcloud at an archive of beautiful memories.
An Archive of Beautiful Memories was generously funded through the HRM Open Projects Program. A huge thanks to all the students who participated and to the City of Halifax for supporting its development and realization.
